Editorial Photography: Trussell Trust and Barclays by John Wellings

Another recent editorial commission went out last week. This time for a partnership between Barclays and the Trussell Trust.

Always fun to light the inside of a shipping container but I’m pretty pleased with the images. I’ve included one below that didn’t make the final selection along with the main header image used on the Barclays website.

Editorial Portrait: Dr John Llewellyn for the Financial Times by John Wellings

Here are a few images from a recent commission to photograph Dr John Llewellyn for the Financial Times.

The article is focused on the campaign to to halt a London-listed company that is seeking to develop land and plant non-native trees on land near to his home.

Editorial Portrait: Royal British Legion Magazine by John Wellings

I was commissioned towards the end of 2021 to photograph Michelle Harley for the RBL magazine. The article was focused on dependency, beating addiction and what it is that makes service personnel vulnerable to addiction. Michelle works for the Legion as an Outreach Officer so she helps service personnel directly with their dependency problems.

It’s always a challenge to shoot a ‘studio’ look in someones front room. Luckily we just about had enough space for this one. Here is the original image below (Left) alongside how it was used in the magazine (Right).

Portrait Photographer Wales: Atlantic Edge Oysters by John Wellings

With this kind of editorial portrait commission being a bit thin on the ground over the last year due to obvious reason, I was really happy to get a chance to shoot some of this style of work again.

Andy from Atlantic Edge Oysters was a total gent and a pleasure to shoot with at a ridiculously early time to be on a freezing ‘beach’ in Pembrokeshire!

Also, I’ve never been more glad to have some old boots stashed in the boot of the car!

Editorial Portrait: Blood Bike Rider for Hochtief by John Wellings

During lockdown I’ve been able to pick up the odd portrait commission, with all wedding and event work having gone for the foreseeable future its been great to have the odd shoot day. Luckily, the Welsh early spring/summer weather was on my side and so I was able to shoot this at a safe enough distance.

The portrait was for German construction company, Hochtief and their group magazine, Concepts. The subject was an employee of the company who also volunteers as a blood bike rider, as you can imagine he’s been pretty busy…

Editorial Photographer Wales: Abi Reader for the Financial Times by John Wellings

Last week I picked up an assignment for the Financial Times to photograph dairy farmer Abi Reader on her farm just outside Cardiff.

I’ve shot a few times at various farms over the years and remembered to pack my boots this time!

Abi is the third generation of the same family on this farm, the passion for the care of her animals was evident in the short space of time I spent there.

Here is a small selection of images from the shoot. I’ll drop a link to the online article once I have it also.

Editorial Photographer: Pets at Home by John Wellings

At the start of October I was commissioned to photograph two dog owners (with their dogs of course…) for the winter issue of Pets at Home MyVIP Magazine.

Here are a couple of my faves from the first of those shoots. The issue should be available in store pretty soon I think but I’ll post up a tear sheet when I get one!

In between jobs I’m still trying to find time to finish off a small set of images from Lisbon from a visit a few weeks ago. Hopefully I should have those up here in a week or so, hopefully!

Business Headshot with a difference.... by John Wellings

I was in Cardiff this morning to photograph some business headshots when I was asked if I minded taking a quick portrait of this guy. Its not my usual sort of thing but I quite like it!

I don’t think i want to work with dogs all the time though, I think I just got lucky that he looked down the lens, he only did it once!

Commercial Photographer South Wales: Business Portraits for Aareon by John Wellings

A couple of images from a recent shoot for Aareon at their office in Swansea.

The typical welsh winter weather coming in to play meant we were forced to use a rather beige office as the location. Fortunately we were able to cover a wall with some posters to achieve the colourful background the client was looking for.
